Coaches

As a coach with the Eastend Minor Hockey Association, you are responsible for leading, teaching, and supporting your players both on and off the ice. This includes:

  • Setting clear goals and expectations for players, parents, and team staff.
  • Teaching age-appropriate skills and promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and Hockey Canada’s Fair Play Code.
  • Creating a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment.
  • Collaborating with other EMHA coaches and mentors, and attending required training sessions.
  • Managing team operations, including rosters, budgets, tournaments, and equipment.
  • Communicating effectively with parents, team officials, and the association.

Coaches are supported through EMHA’s Mentorship Program, provided with practice resources and equipment, and expected to model leadership, respect, and integrity at all times.

Coach Application

Coach applications for the 2025-2026 season are now open!

If you are interested in being a Head or Assistant Coach for the 2025-2026 season, please follow the process below...

  • Download House League application HERE
  • Fill out the coach application and email it to: vice.president@eastendstorm.ca
  • Obtain your Police Record Check, Level 3 Vulnerable Sector, if yours has expired.
    • The EMHA volunteer letter to receive the police record check without having to pay is available HERE (2025)
    • VSCs are valid for 3 years. If yours is due to expire during the current hockey season, please obtain a new one.
    • VSCs are now managed by HEO through their portal: https://www.hockeyeasternontario.ca/ New VSCs are required to be uploaded once they are received. If your VSC has not expired, you are responsible for filling out the declaration through that same portal.

Coach Selections and Certifications / Qualifications

How and when do I apply for a coaching position?

Coach applications for the following season are generally made available mid-May, and can be found on the EMHA website. Submissions are accepted throughout the summer, with a deadline usually set later in August. Please refer to the menu above for the application and deadline for submissions.

What is the interview process?

Shortly after the application deadline, a member of the EMHA Coach Selection Committee will contact applicants to arrange a date/time for an interview. Interviews are generally conducted in late-August/early-September by a 3-4 member panel. Interview questions will cover coaching experience, knowledge as well as coaching philosophy.

House League Head Coach Certification/Qualification Requirements:

Respect In Sport for Activity Leaders is available HERE
Current Police Record Check (Level 3 Vulnerable Sector) is required for all coaches

  • U7 level:

To achieve this status you must complete the following components:

    • Coach 1 (1 day in-class course - reimbursed by the EMHA, subject to pre-approval)
    • Hockey University Online Coach 1/2 course*
    • Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders
    • Gender Identity Online Training
    • Hockey University - Planning a Safe Return to Hockey
  • U9 to U21 levels:

To achieve this status you must complete the following components:

    • Coach 2 (1 day in-class course**)
    • Hockey University Online Coach 1/2 course*
    • Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders
    • Gender Identity Online Training
    • Hockey University - Planning a Safe Return to Hockey

* the Hockey University Online Coach 1/2 course must be completed before you can register for the Coach 1 in-class course.
** House League coaches at the U13 level or higher and have previously qualified with Development 1 or High Performance 1 do NOT need to take the Coach 2 course.

What are my responsibilities as a Head Coach?

The responsibilities of the Head Coach include:

  • Developing and communicating clear and specific goals for the team, and individual players;
  • Modeling and teaching necessary, and age-appropriate skills for the development of individual players & team;
  • Promoting and enforcing Hockey Canada’s Fair Play Code;
  • Modelling good sportsmanship at all times;
  • Developing and communicating clear and specific expectations for players, team officials, and parents;
  • Supporting and collaborating with other EMHA coaches, and teams;
  • Providing an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration among team officials, players, and parents;
